Vredeburg building located right in front of the Great House,
with a view to protect the Dutch resident who resides in the building.
The fort
was built by the lane I to the Netherlands in 1760 and rebuilt by the Dutch
colonial Governor WH Van Osseberch in 1787 and renamed the 'Rusternberg'. In
1867 an earthquake and causing considerable damage. After restoration, the
castle was changed back to 'Vredeburg', which means the fortress of peace. From
1945 to 1947 the castle serves as military headquarters for the Dutch, British,
and Japanese and includes barracks, housing officer, a storehouse and a prison
hospital. In the complex there is an excavation associated with a small bridge,
and the main gate leading into the complex in which 13 buildings. This old fort
is now a museum featuring the history of the independence of Indonesia. And the
old barracks have been converted into exhibition space often display visual
art.
